Mandatory
A marked line or arrow a disc must pass on a specific side, with a penalty for missing it.
A mandatory, usually shortened to mando, is a rule feature on certain holes requiring a disc to pass a marked line, tree, or arrow on a specific side before it is allowed to reach the target. Mandos are typically used around dangerous features like roads or paths, forcing players onto a safer line rather than a shorter but riskier one.
Mandatory lines matter because missing one usually carries a real penalty, often forcing a rethrow from the previous lie plus a stroke, or in some formats putting the disc out of bounds entirely, similar to a standard OB penalty. Understanding exactly which side of a marked tree or line counts as correct before teeing off avoids an easily preventable stroke.
A common mistake for players new to a course is not noticing a mando sign at all, especially on a hole that looks like a simple, open shot from the tee. Walking or looking ahead on unfamiliar holes, and asking local players about any mandos, is a simple habit that prevents avoidable penalties.
