Grip

How a player holds a disc for release, with power grip and fan grip being the two most common styles.

Grip refers to how a player holds a disc before and during the throw, and it has a large effect on both distance and accuracy regardless of which disc is being thrown. The two most common backhand grips are the power grip, where fingers curl fully under the rim, and the fan grip, where fingers spread out flat along the underside of the flight plate.

Grip matters because a weak or inconsistent grip is one of the most common reasons a disc releases with unwanted spin, wobble, or an accidental hyzer or anhyzer angle that sends the throw off line. A firm, consistent grip also lets a player generate more spin, which stabilizes the disc in flight and reduces wobble, especially important in wet or cold conditions when plastic gets slicker.

A frequent beginner mistake is gripping a disc too loosely out of fear of hurting fingers on release, which actually increases wobble and reduces control. Practicing a firm, repeatable grip on a forgiving putter before moving to faster discs, and using a grip enhancer in wet weather, both help build the muscle memory needed for a clean release.
